Psalm 56

1  Have mercy on me, O God, for they trample over me; ♦︎
all day long they assault and oppress me.
2  My adversaries trample over me all the day long; ♦︎
many are they that make proud war against me.
3  In the day of my fear I put my trust in you, ♦︎
in God whose word I praise.
4  In God I trust, and will not fear, ♦︎
for what can flesh do to me?
5  All day long they wound me with words; ♦︎
their every thought is to do me evil.
6  They stir up trouble; they lie in wait; ♦︎
marking my steps, they seek my life.
7  Shall they escape for all their wickedness? ♦︎
In anger, O God, cast the peoples down.
8  You have counted up my groaning;
put my tears into your bottle; ♦︎
are they not written in your book?
9  Then shall my enemies turn back
on the day when I call upon you; ♦︎
this I know, for God is on my side.
10  In God whose word I praise,
in the Lord whose word I praise, ♦︎
in God I trust and will not fear:
what can flesh do to me?
11  To you, O God, will I fulfil my vows; ♦︎
to you will I present my offerings of thanks,
12  For you will deliver my soul from death
and my feet from falling, ♦︎
that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

1 Kings 17: 8-16

The Widow of Zarephath

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9‘Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’ 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.’ 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’ 12But she said, ‘As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.’ 13Elijah said to her, ‘Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

1 Corinthians 2: 6-16

The True Wisdom of God

Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written,
‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
   nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him’—
10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.*

14 Those who are unspiritual* do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are discerned spiritually. 15Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny.
16 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord
   so as to instruct him?’
But we have the mind of Christ.
